We continue to receive a lot of inquiries for the Asus EEE PC even if we have posted the item as Sold Out. Unfortunately there are really NO stocks at this time. The Asus distributor was not even able to supply our orders. At present the only available model is the "Surf" Variant, which at only P1,000 less we can NOT in conscience endorse. We are not that desperate "just to sell" units we will not use other selves. There are two variants. One, the 701 is posted on the page. The second(2nd) variant is the "Surf" which is a stripped down Asus EEE PC. What is lacking in the 'Surf" 1. No Webcam 2. No provision to upgrade RAM (701 can take up to 2Gb) 3. Cache-less Processor. (701 has 512kb of L2 Cache) 4. Has a weaker Battery 5. No Asus Pouch Items 1 to 4 leads to Poor Performance... but then it comes it different colors .^^. Only White Supplies Last. - you will need the DvD drive to install the XP Drivers which is in DvD format We got hold of our first Asus EEE PC direct from Taiwan last October 29, 2007. While everyone was guessing on what this model could offer we were already testing the actual unit. We also made available a few units for friends and selected clients who wanted to be early users. After a month of actual use and in line with the policy to test before we sell, we are confident we can provide more than just an initial feel of what is touted as the "World's Fastest selling PC". Asus claims an Eee PC is Sold Every 6 Seconds! Note: This is the 701 Variant and not the surf. The "Surf" variant is P1,500.00 cheaper because it is a stripped down Asus EEE PC. What is lacking in the 'Surf" 1. No Webcam 2. No provision to upgrade RAM (701 can take up to 2Gb) 3. Cache-less Processor. (701 has 512kb of L2 Cache) 4. Has a weaker Battery 5. No Asus Pouch Items 1 to 4 of the "Surf" leads to Poor Performance... but then it comes it different colors .^^. With so many reviews available on the internet("google is your friend"), we are skipping the review and will instead answer 12 of the most commonly asked questions. 1. Processor: This unit must be slow, it comes with a Celeron-M processor. 2. Operating System: Can I load Windows XP on this laptop? 3. Hard drive: a. Is 4Gb of Harddrive Enough? b. Can I upgrade the Harddrive? 4. RAM: Should I increase RAM to 1Gb? 5. Can I watch DvD On this laptop? 6. Can I use the EEE PC to surf the net and email? 7. Is the keyboard easy to use? 8. How long is the Battery life? 9. Can I connect the EEE PC to a projector for presentations? 10. Can I use a mouse? 11. Is the EEE PC durable? It looks like a V-Tech Toy. 12. Can this laptop replace my desktop and existing laptop? A short insight. A Lawyer may be able to use this to type a pleading but because of the keyboard it will be slow. But Attorney can use the EEE PC to surf the net for the latest jurisprudence by the SC. A Finance Officer will get dizzy trying to use a 7inch display for a 5-column spreadsheet. But CPA can use this to check on-line the status of bank accounts. A Doctor who will use the EEE PC for research may miss some very important details. But Doc may use the EEE PC to access Patient Records while during rounds without the burden of weight. A Businessman who takes this machine out for a meeting will not express achievement or confidence, but the same Entrepreneur can use the EEE PC to check the stock market while caught in traffic. A Student who intends to use this for a Thesis will get a grade of 200; but not in the report card, rather in his eye glasses. But the same Senior can probably use this EEE PC to chat, blog and Surf the net. As long time laptop users, our opinion is the primary strength of the EEE PC laptop is as a 2nd unit. A mobile unit for a desktop user. A second more portable unit for a laptop user. The size and weight of this laptop allows you to put it in any bag and not feel the weight. The Price does not make the owner guilty when the item is lost, dropped or damaged. The EEE PC is more economical than the latest Nokia Communicator, yet it is easier to use. The EEE PC in our opinion matches the portability of the Blackberry, yet is easier to use because of the keyboard layout. The EEE PC is ideal for those who want something small and Wi-Fi enabled. The EEE PC is certainly a very innovative unit. The Eee PC’s "earned" reputation as the Fastest Selling PC in the World comes from the great user expectation as a simple and portable device focused on providing users with the most comprehensive Internet applications based on three Es: Easy to learn, work, play; Excellent Internet experience and Excellent on-the-Go. If you care to read the the reply to the 12questions, they are posted below 1. Processor: This unit must be slow, it comes with a Celeron-M processor. We will not get into the details about Intel's Celeron-M 353, but if you care to read, we have a short article about Processors <click here>. Whatever processor you have in your computer at the end of the line all information comes and ends-up on the harddrive. We stated in the article about processors, that no matter how fast your processor is rated, it will be bogged down by the slow harddrive. We have been saying for years that we do not need faster processors, we need faster hard drives! note: As shown below, the EEE PC is by factory default under-clocked to 280Mhz FSB(instead of 400Mhz) resulting to the processor running only at 630Mhz instead of the rated 900Mhz. ![]() Our favorite innovation on the EEE PC is the use of a solid state Device (SSD) as its harddrive. What is a Solid state device? The principle behind solid state drives is that there should be no moving parts. Data is split into word length pieces and stored in memory. It is then accessed almost instantaneously(technically at the speed of light), there is no latency experienced when data is transferred. This technology has been used in computer RAM for many years, but for a long time it was too expensive for manufacturers to consider using it as persistent storage in sufficient volumes to replace the hard disk drive. Technology has allowed the SSD to be economical enough to be used in the EEE PC. Comparing a Solid State Device to a Mechanical Harddrive is like our experience when we access information from a Floppy disk vs a USB Flash Drive. Despite being Under-clocked to 630Mhz, because of the Solid State device as a hardrive the EEE PC is surprisingly fast. This system with the Celerom-M 353 is very responsive, and offers very little waiting time. Is it slow? Our reply is "No!" 2. Operating System: Can I load Windows XP on this laptop? Included with the EEE PC is a Free Linux based software streamlined, tab-based interface that offers six(6) easy-to-understand options: Internet, Work, Learn, Play, Settings, and Favorites. But reality is 99% of us are more accustomed to the slower, resource hungry and expensive Windows Software. Yes you can load XP on the EEE PC! In fact Asus has made all the Windows XP component drivers available with the package through a DvD Drive Disk. Please note that the driver disk come in DvD and for this reason we are offering a DvD Drive option with the models offered. If you do not believe us then you can test our demo unit running on a full version of Windows XP complete with Microsoft Office, YM and a DvD decoder. There are many discussions on what version of XP to use whether the Nlite or Full version, that is a matter of personal taste. The bottom line is it works on XP. Vista? Do not ask us about Vista. We do not like Vista at this stage of the software. Maybe when they release Vista Service Pack 2. We are actually thankful Asus put XP Drivers and not Vista Drivers! 3. Hard drive: a. Is 4Gb of Harddrive Enough? The 4Gb is sufficient to load Windows XP, All the drivers, Microsoft Office, an Anti-virus software. After all the installation we found that there was still 1.3Gb left on the Solid State Drive. Is that enough? Unfortunately No. In our opinion the very objective of the 4Gb SSD is to allow for the OS and basic programs to be installed internally. If the SSD capacity is increased the price will increase as well. You may want to consider the rational behind the intention for the user to purchase a separate SD Card (in the vicinity of P2,400.00 for 2Gb) with a Max capacity of 4Gb. The separate SD card can be inserted on the built-in slot of the EEE PC and will not add weight or bulk. An SD Card makes transferring of files efficient since we do not feel that the EEE PC will become the primary laptop of the user. A 2nd option is to use a USB Flash Drive as data storage. Prices of Flash Drives are dropping daily with capacity every increasing. The 3rd option is to use an external USB 2.5inch Harddrive with capacity of up to 200Gb. The downside is that external USB harddrives are still bulky and are prone to be dropped (Drop it and data will be lost). In the near future SD card prices will be dropping and should make storage less of an issue. You may even use all options as the need arises. 3b. Can I upgrade the Harddrive? No. There are no available Solid State Harddrive in the market. You can however add a 4Gb SD Card and make it work like an 2nd internal harddrive. If your Operating system gets corrupted your data will be safe. ![]() 4. RAM: Should I increase RAM to 1Gb? Ram can be increased to 1x1024mb(1Gb). We even tried successfully to load a 1x2048mb(2Gb) stick and it was recognized by the system. You may upgrade the RAM but is upgrading RAM recommended? NO! In systems with a Mechanical Harddrive we needed as much RAM as possible to optimized data transfer speed. Since the EEE PC uses a Solid State Device(SSD) as the harddrive, increasing ram does not offer the same advantage. The SSD is almost as fast as DDR2 RAM. 5. Can I watch DvD On this laptop? Yes!. There are two options to watch movies on this laptop. 1. Use an external USB DvD Drive 2. Rip the movie to your 4GB SD Card and watch the movie without any external attachments :-) The screen display is decent. The audio is surprisingly loud enough most likely because the speakers are placed beside the display and is not obstructed by your palm. Should you wish to connect to a Headset or External Speakers a 5.1-channel High Definition Audio (Realtek ALC6628) is built-into the system. 6. Can I use the EEE PC to surf the net and email? To begin with the screen resolution isn't ideal. Since a great majority of websites default to 1024x768 pixels wide, the 800x400 pixel means many websites can't fit the width into the screen. Second(2nd) on a regular display what would appear as a whole page will be cut 3/4 of the size because of the lower height resolution. Solution is to load Opera browser<click here> which allows for website scaling. Downside is by scaling the site, the text and images also appear smaller. Sending and receiving Email is a not a problem at all and is probably why the EEE PC is an excellent communicator. You may even use the internal 300kb webcam for visual communications. ![]() 7. Is the keyboard easy to use? This is a subjective question. It is definitely easier to type on the keyboard then using your phone to text. It is definitely easier to type on the keyboard that using a Ultra-Mobile PC(UMPC) that uses a "thumber" or thumb keypad. But after 1 month we still have a hard time using a small keyboard because our fingers do not fit the keys. If we had smaller fingers it would be less of an issue. Forget about touch typing. We will regenerate to the "Tuldok" or one finger typing on the EEE PC. Touch typing results to other keys getting pressed because of the small size of the keys. But remember, this is still more simple than text typing. 8. How long is the Battery life? A user said he monitored the consumption to be at 10% every 20minutes. It is safe to conclude 200-Minutes with WiFi On and Screen at 75% brightness. ![]() 9. Can I connect the EEE PC to a projector for presentations? On the right side of the laptop is a D-SUB port for hooking up an external monitor. Yes you can use the EEE PC to connect to an external display like an LCD monitor or even a Projector. However please note that if you will use the dual display option or clone mode (Laptop On and external display on); the external display will only be at 800x480Pixels. This resolution results to a very fuzzy display on external monitors. The solution is to use single output only or output to 1 display only. In this case the EEE PC display turned off with the external turned-on. If set to projector output only you can achieve higher resolution like SVGA or XGA. ![]() 10. Can I use a mouse? The EEE PC offers three(3) USB ports and definitely you can use a USB mouse to make the interface more friendly. You may even connect an external keyboard if you intend to use as a desktop replacement ;-) 11. Is the EEE PC durable? It looks like a V-Tech Toy. In one month that this model has been sold to friends and selected customers we have not had a single unit returned or received any complaint. We have read the reviews written by some of our buyers and they range from using the machine while sitting on the throne(Excuse us please) to using the EEE PC as a desktop replacement when the desktop broke down. It seems to be durable enough despite the very affordable price. If there is any suspect in the system it will be our favorite part which is the Solid State Device as a Harddrive. The SSD have Limited write cycles. Research shows that Typical Flash storage will typically wear out after 100,000-300,000 write cycles, while high endurance Flash storage is often marketed with endurance of 1–5 million write cycles. How long will this last? We do not know, only time will tell. In other systems when the Harddrive crashes get a new harddrive and the system in revived. The SSD on this system is soldered to the board. This mean that most likely when you consume the designed write cycles for the SSD card, the whole unit must be junked. Then again maybe that isn't so bad because this EEE PC model 701 is priced at only 25% of most ultra-portable laptops. ![]() 12. Can this laptop replace my desktop and existing laptop? a. The Screen at 7-inch is too small for continuous use without harming your eyes. "Duduling ka talaga!" b. The keyboard is too small for efficient touch-typing. c. The room for expansion is minimal. Having stated these 3reasons we would have to recommend against selling your existing laptop or desktop and buying the EEE PC. Do we recommend the EEE PC as a 2nd laptop? As a communicator and internet communicator a definite YES! ASUS EEE PC for more information: <click here> Cash Price - check payment subject to clearing.
