Our take: This CQ40-340TU is the updated version of our best seller CQ40-108TU <click here>. HP upgraded the following components: 1) The processor in the new model is the Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4200(2.0); which features an increased front side bus of 800Mhz. 2) The RAM is now DDR2 800Mhz from DDR2 667Mhz. 3) The Harddrive has also been upgraded to a massive 250Gb. 4) Finally, the optical drive has been upgraded to a DvD-Writer Lightscribe that makes it possible to label DvD's using the optical drive. The CQ40-108TU was an excellent value for money proposition!... the CQ40-340TU now with a faster processor and larger harddrive at the same price point as the previous models is well - a certified Bang for the Buck! What has not changed is that like the previous model if you purchase this laptop at CoolTOYZ you can experience the every reliable XP and ready to use out of the box!

The latest addition in HP's Compaq Presario line up is the CQ Series including this CQ40-340TU model. According to HP, the world’s largest PC maker firm, the new series is designed for those on the go and features a new industrial design. The new CQ40 series offers the same body design like the high-end CQ45 <click here>, but does not offer the HP imprint. Instead the CQ40 presents a high Gloss Black exterior with a brushed aluminum Compaq Logo engraved into the surface. It should be noted that the metallic logo adds elegance to the design. Inside, the Palm rest and Touchpad is in glossy silver, while the keyboard and speaker covers are in Black. You will find two buttons above the keyboard, a white LED backlit power button and the Backlit blue WiFi activation button. Overall the design is very pleasing with an aura of being futuristic given the metallic touches.



Inside the newly relased CQ40-340TU is an assortment of new technologies. The processor is the 64-bit Ready Intel Pentium Dual Core T4200 processor offering 2.0GHz core speed, 1MB L2 cache and an upgraded 800MHz frontside bus. The previous CQ40-108TU model offered a Dual Core T3200(2.0) with 667Mhz front side bus speed. The increase in bus speed to 800Mhz allows information to travel faster between the processor and harddrive, ram and gpu this improving performance. It has been a practice at CoolTOYZ to measure the performance of any new system using the Windows Media Experience Index, a feature found in the Vista Operating system. The Pentium T4200 like its Core2 Duo cousins offers two processing engines that work in tandem, and delivers enhanced performance for today's demanding applications such as CAD tools, 3D and 2D modeling, video editing, digital music, digital photography and gaming. Importantly, as a member of the Pentium Family the processor features Intel Speedstep to manage battery life which is very important to mobile computing.

Another technology found in the CQ40 is the combination of Intel GL40 chipset and Mobile Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics. The Mobile GL40 Express chipset is the latest Mobile Express chipset and is an ideal solution for value-oriented embedded applications. Features include an accelerated Front Side bus of 800MHz Front Side Bus(FSB), high-bandwidth interfaces including PCI Express, Serial ATA, and USB 2.0, and an improved integrated graphics engine through the Intel GMA 4500MHD.



Crispy fresh graphics is achieved though the DirectX 10 capable onboard graphics adapter Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD (sometimes also called GMA X4500 HD or other combinations). The chip has no dedicated graphics memory, but takes dynamically an amount from the main memory (up to 384 MB). Compared to the predecessor GMA X3100, the GMA 4500MHD has two more shaders and a 33 MHz higher core clock speed. Therefore, the chip is noticeably faster than the older one (especially in 3DMark06). A new feature of the GMA chip is the ability of the integrated HD video-decoding functions to decode HD-videos in the formats AVC, VC-2, and MPEG-2 making Blu-Ray playback possible.

In usual HP fashion, the latest Presario line provide users an excellent experience on both digital entertainment and productivity. The system features a Double-layer Super Multi DVD±RW drive, making playing DvD Movies or or writing DVDs extremely easy. Further enhancing your Mutli-media experience is audio speakers made by ALTEC LANSING. To output video to your HD TV or have super fast transfers to external media. An HDMI port lets you easily export audio and video to an HDTV. Also available is a built-in 5-in-1 digital media reader to transfer photos and files quickly and easily. For wireless connectivity both Wireless LAN and Bluetooth is a built in feature. Bluetooth is specially useful for downloading images to your cellular phone or to synch handheld devices without the use of wires.



When we first got this model we were disappointed to find out that Windows XP is no longer supported for the CQ line in the HP website. Thanks to the hardwork of the staff we were able to break the code and have found a way to make the system work with Xp-Professional. Why the obsession with XP? For one, we got 15minutes more battery life on XP Professional vs. Vista Home Premium. More importantly XP does not suffer from compatibility problems we have experienced with Vista operating system. Compaq laptops have developed a reputation as simple and reliable machines with decent configuration, at an excellent price. The CQ40 series is all that with the additional bonus of elegant styling.
