Our take: The Acer Timeline 5810 has NO alternative in the market. We normally do not carry U.S. Acer models because no matter what other sellers state, Acer laptops are not covered by the standard International warranty <click here>. However when we were presented the opportunity to offer this Aspire Timeline 5810T we could not resist the temptation to offer this unique model specially because of the bargain price. For the confidence of buyers this U.S. model will be offered with a limited 6-months Parts and Service store warranty. If this disclosure is acceptable, read on and find out the three(3) features make the Acer 5810T unmatched in the local market.



To begin with the Acer Aspire Timeline 5810T is thin and lightweight but a full featured 15.6inch[16:9] widescreen notebook. We verified the actual weight of the laptop and it is 5.3lbs./2.4kg (2.65Kg with the adaptor), which is remarkable given that the smaller 14inch Asus K40in weighs 2.38Kgs. Also extraordinary is that at the thickest area of the laptop it only measures 1.16inch, making it probably the thinnest 15.6’WideScreen[16:9] laptop we have handled. It is even thinner than most netbooks including the Asus EEE PC 1000H. What makes the weight and size of the laptop exceptional is this model is still full featured including a Full Size Keyboard with dedicated Numeric Pad and even an internal DvD-Writer! Other features include a multi-format card reader, four USB ports, gigabit Ethernet and even HDMI and VGA connections.



The thin outer chassis of the Aspire Timeline 5810T is constructed using brushed aluminium, lending not only a high-quality feel but excellent durability for the part of a laptop that's usually exposed to the most abuse. The interior is made of plastic in matte carbon grey finish preventing the palmrest from becoming a fingerprint magnet. For those who do not like batteries sticking out of the main laptop frame, you will be glad to note that the 6-cell battery does not hang off the back, but neatly integrated within the footprint of the case.

The Aspire Timeline 5810T is rated by Acer to provide 8Hours of battery life. Our actual test using DvD Playback with WiFi-On and LCD at maximum brightness provided 6.5Hours of endurance which is terrific given the display on the laptop is a cinematic 15.6inch!

We have had a long preference for long battery life over pure speed. In many of the items we have offered since under the CoolTOYZ tradename since 2003, a major criteria has been Battery life. Based on our experience as laptop users, an powerful and fast laptop is only useful as long as the battery can provide it power. If your uber fast laptop needs to be beside a wall outlet most of the time, what then makes it different from a desktop? How does the Timeline 5810T achieve such impressive battery life?

The Acer 5810T utilizes the Intel Pentium SU7200 a single core processor with 1.3Ghz Processor Speed, 2Mb L2-Cahce and 800Mhz Front side bus <click here>. Importantly the SU7200 is classified as an Ultra-Low Voltage processor rated by Intel to have a maximum TDP of 10Watts compared to the standard Core2 Duo processor consuming 35watts or three(3) times more power. It is no wonder that the battery of this model is able to produce Three(3) times more endurance compared to Core2 Duo models.



Is the SU7200 slow? As usual we rely on the Windows® Experience Index to measure the capability of each component of a laptop. WEI is a feature built into Windows Vista™ and measures various performance characteristics and capabilities of the hardware it is running on and reports them as a Windows Experience Index(WEI) score, a number between 1.0 and 5.9 for Windows Vista. The WEI score of the processor is 3.3Points which is not the fastest by a long mile. But the whole system score is 3.2Points which points to the Video Graphics as the slowest components of the system.



What we are saying is even if you put a faster processor on this system, the Graphics will still slow down the system. As evidence of what we have stated you can compare the WEI score of the Acer 4736 with Core2 processor and verify personally that the WEI score of the Core2 Duo system is the same as with this Pentium SU7200 <click here> Since the system performance will not improve even with a Core2 Processor, Acer made good in utilizing the SU7200 to provide the longest battery endurance.

One would ask, why do you want a 15.6inch display if you want a slim and light portable laptop? We answer with another question, why do you want a large screen TV in your room? Images simply look better and are easier on the eyes with a large display. On this laptop the display is an Acer® CineCrystal 15.6inch WXGA (1366 x 768) high-brightness (200-nit) TFT display with 16:9 aspect ratio and LED backlight. CineCrystal shine means that is the glossy type of display. 15.6inch of real estate allows you to view two websites or spreadsheets side by side without squinting. An LED backlit allows this system to be thin and importantly is very energy efficient to complements the Intel SU7200 processor.



It can not be denied that the third and most inviting feature of this model is the Price! At P35,888.00 it does not have competition in its class. It is the only 15.6inch[16:9] laptop at this price range. Does Cheap mean poor quality? Put it this way… Our experience with the Acer brand has been capricious. Acer has the ability to develop innovative great new products and designs that capture the customers attention and make it the brand leader in the category. The Acer will continue cutting price until the product deteriorates and get the ire of the market. Acer will then release a new product and start the cycle all over again… Acer has done this with the Gemstone, then the Aspire One and recently with the 4736-series, we really do not understand why Acer is doing this to their products. Luckily this is the 1st version of the Timeline 5810-series meaning it has not been subject to cost cutting and we are confident of the build quality.

When you want a laptop with long battery life you often have two choices. The first is to get a laptop with a large 12-cell battery but this is heavy. The other choice is to get a laptop model with a small screen and compromise on the keyboard, the optical drive and other features. The Acer Aspire 5810T is a unmatch laptop model because it offers extremely long battery life and yet is full featured, and importantly very affordable. It is for this reason our opinion is if you are searching for an affordable laptop with a large cinematic display and 8hours of battery life, at this time you have no other choice except the Acer Timeline 5810T!
