OUR TAKE: Why do we continue to offer this model? Well for one this is one of the last Core2 Dup laptop models offered with a BOX display instead of a widescreen. The BOX display is important specially for those who do connect their laptop to an LCD projector since these are mainly box format. Performance wise the Core2 Duo processor on this unit is more than capable to handle any office work, school assignment, internet surfing, chatting and multimedia application. Finally, as part of the Thinkpad family, reliability and build quality of this laptop is legendary. After numerous quantity of this models sold, none have been returned for any issues.

From a distance I'd bet you couldn't tell the difference at all between the R and T series Laptops. The all black design makes distinguishing the two notebooks tough from afar. Not surprising most buyers have (including myself) asked - so is it just the letter 'S' between 'R' and 'T' that separate these two models or what?

The ThinkPad R60 has essentially the same specs and performance results as the T60. Except the T60 with the same configuration as this R60 costs about $2,400 while the R60 costs about $2,000. Both machines comes in any color you want -- as long as it is black. You will never have to color coordinate because black can go with anything. The black also gives it that business feel and and feels comfortable in your hands. Granted that the thinkpad black does not come across as a sexy notebook like Sony's VAIO series, it's hard to deny that it oozes its own sex appeal in a different sort of way through its sleek and slim exterior.

Both T60 and R60 utilizes the latest mobile technology from Intel, the Centrino Duo platform, codenamed MEROM. The Intel(R) Core2(TM) Duo processor T5500 features 1.66GHz processor speed, a 2MB internal L2 memory cache and 667MHz front side bus speed. The Merom features EM64T 64-bit extensions for future 64-bit operating systems. Dual Core Processing results in high performance even when users concurrently play videos and rip music files or edit spreadsheets while running virus-scans. Intel has claimed that Merom will provide 20% more performance yet maintain the same battery life as the Yonah-based Core Duo. With Intel Centrino Duo mobile technology, users get dual-core support performance plus enhanced power-saving features for extended battery life and expanded wireless connectivity features for greater mobility.

Starting with the R60, the Lenovo R-series features one of the biggest selling points of the T-series - the keyboard. The keyboard on the Thinkpads is absolutely stellar, with tactile feedback and key positioning among the best in the market. Much like the T and X series designs of the past, Lenovo's Ultra-Nav and TrackPoint technology is also the best in the business, both of which are included in the R-series.

Both the T and R- Series offer the ThinkVantage design Features. There is a keyboard light that is mounted on the frame of the LCD panel and does a decent job of illuminating the keyboard when working in the dark. Thinkpads also offer multi-bay drives that are swappable, both include the excellent Active Protection System for protecting hard drive data, both have a magnesium roll cage. Rounding up the similarily both T and R series Thinkpads have the same port selection.

But there is more than an alphabetical difference. The R60 is not as wonderfully thin and light as the T60 and the lid of the R60 is constructed of plastic while the T60 is made of a mag-alloy -- a sturdier and lighter material. Still the IBM R60 has everything you expect from a ThinkPad packed into a sturdy, lightweight container. If you feel it is not worth paying an additional $600.00 for a Magnesium Alloy casing then the Thinkpad R60 is the practical machine for you.
